ALL IN for an overhaul
Founded in 1906, The Kinkaid School, Houston’s oldest independent coeducational school, is two years into a major fundraising campaign that will radically transform every aspect of the educational experience. Houston firm Studio RED Architects has been shepherding Kinkaid administrators and the Board of Trustees through the design and construction process.
Studio RED charged PRISM with developing a variety of renderings to support the ALL IN capital campaign. Phase I was completed in 2023 and included a new Lower School and Administration building (currently serving as the temporary Upper School), an existing gym repurposed into a central utility plant, and a new two-story fieldhouse and gymnasium. Phase II construction began in September 2023 and is estimated to be completed in Summer 2025. It includes the replacement of the existing Upper School with a forward-thinking building that can accommodate innovation and evolution in high school pedagogy. A portion of the existing Student Life Building will also be converted for new visual and performing arts spaces. Studio RED and PRISM together are helping Kinkaid reach its goal of providing education in a new, more complex world.
The new Upper School will be a prominent element of the final campus plan. A perimeter of arched covered walkways will surround a contemporary two-story circular building with a large interior courtyard. The new Upper School will include classrooms, STEM labs, administration spaces, weight rooms, locker rooms, an auditorium, a cafe, a design lab, art spaces, robotics lab, alumni center, dean’s offices, and other resource and support spaces. Upper School classes are currently housed in the new Lower School building, and will relocate to the new building when it is complete.
