Fostering connection through recreation
On the northern outskirts of Austin in the city of Cedar Park, the Ismaili community now has a dedicated multipurpose center for gathering and celebrating. The Unity Recreation Center opened in December 2024 in Cedar Park, Texas. It spans 32,000 square feet in two stories and includes a gymnasium and activity center, with space for pickleball, volleyball, and basketball. Built with private funds on private land, the Unity Recreation Center is adjacent to the Ismaili Jamatkhana, which is the congregational prayer space. Both serve the surrounding Ismaili and broader communities.
Texas is home to the largest population of Ismaili in the United States, according to the Aga Khan Council. The Ismaili community is a branch of Shiite Muslims led by the Aga Khan, who is believed to be a direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad. Non-profit organization URC Foundation serves the Austin Ismaili community and funded, maintains, and operates the Unity Recreation Center. Osborn & Vane Architects designed the center and commissioned PRISM to produce exterior renderings for marketing and construction. With the Unity Recreation Center, the community now has more space to share fellowship and improve their physical well-being, which they extol as a source of inspiration to make the world better for all.
