Sea of green in the concrete jungle
The Lawn at the Loop will provide an outdoor oasis right in the heart of Houston. This renovated area in Houston’s First Baptist Church is designed to promote many types of fellowship in the open air. The 23,300sf outdoor courtyard sits within the main campus on the southwest corner of the I-10/610 interchange.
Merriman Holt Powell Architects reimagined the area as a place to serve church members and the surrounding community, both for special events and in daily life. PRISM produced several renderings to depict the various uses within the courtyard.
It’s full of great amenities such as:
- Covered bandstand/stage
- Large LED screen
- Artificial turf lawn with area for 500 temporary seats
- Raised berm for play and additional seating
- Covered canopies on two sides
- Playground with varying surface elements
- New lighting, including string lights
- New furniture
Construction is underway and expected to be completed by February 2022. The redesigned Lawn has new entry gates to provide increased security and allow for community use of the space. Church staff members already have several fun ideas for how to draw people in, including worship gatherings, movie nights, concerts, family playdates, and picnics. All the new amenities make this outdoor area an ideal place to hold a wedding and reception. Also thanks to this project, Houston is getting 20 new trees through a donation to Trees for Houston.
